I am a Professor of Statistics and Head of the Statistics Division in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. I received an M. Sc. in statistics (major) and mathematics in 1985, and a Ph. D. in statistics in 1990, both from the University of Helsinki. Prior to my appointment in 1999 to the Chair in Statistics at the University of Oulu, I worked as an assistant professor from 1986 to 1995, and as a senior assistant professor from 1996 to 1999, in the Department of Statistics at the University of Helsinki. I maintain a (formal) contact with my Alma Mater having been appointed Docent in Applied Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics, University of Helsinki, in 1998.

Extended visits of mine abroad include the two-year postdoctoral period 1990--1992 which I spent as a member of a research group working on design of experiments at the Institut für Mathematik, Universität Augsburg, and the one-year period 1994--1995 as a Senior Fulbright Scholar with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Maryland Baltimore County.

My current research interests include pattern theory, statistical analysis of shapes and images (new research areas), multivariate analysis, geometric probability inequalities, and matrix and operator inequalities.

In my free time, I enjoy various outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain climbing, cross-country and backcountry skiing.
